SHOOR’s Guide to Local Coffee Brands and Brews

Stuck at home, everyone’s missing their favorite cafés, morning pick-me-ups, and rainy day go-tos. We find ourselves constantly Googling “coffee shop near me” in an effort to recapture the magic of our favorite joint kilometers away only to see the same big-name cafés again and again. Our caffeine options may be limited by the ever-changing lockdown, but don’t fret! Not only are we bringing you unique online experiences to enjoy at home, our coffee guide also serves up a showcase of small businesses and local coffee brands dedicated to delivering top-notch quality coffee straight to your doorstep.

1. Candid Coffee

One peep at Candid Coffee’s Instagram will have your mouth watering. The mobile coffee connoisseurs offer a wide selection of ready-to-drink brews and freshly roasted beans that’ll appeal to casual sippers and enthusiasts alike. Their bright but balanced Honey Cereal blend is a definite must-try!

2. Firefly Coffee

Dubbing themselves “your neighborhood specialty coffee provider,” no other description seems more fitting for this coffee house. Not only do they sell cold brews, dirty cookies, and beans by the bag, they also wholesale their roasts, so you can kick-start your own homebrew business! Check them out on Instagram @fireflycoffee.ph.

3. Common Folk

Common Folk is a local favorite for Katipunan-based coffee-lovers. The cozy atmosphere and delicious coffee make the coffee bar a sanctuary for anyone looking for a good cup of joe. Now, they’re bringing Katipunan comfort to you! You can have a bag of beans delivered to your home, or you can opt to go for the full experience with a full meal to start the day right. The Big Breakfast plus an iced mocha with Oatly oat milk is a killer combo.

4. The Good Cup Coffee Co.

Perfect for hardcore coffee lovers and enthusiasts out there, The Good Cup Coffee Co. is home to the 2019-20 back-to-back Philippine Brewers Cup Champions. They’re a Cebu-based company, but they have no problem serving caffeine-cravers nationwide and globally! Go ahead and treat yourself to their competition series beans. The El Puente Gesha, a delectably fruity roast, is a crowd-favorite.

5. The Curator

The Curator has been named one of Asia’s 50 best bars by William Reed Business Media every year since 2016, and 2020 saw them claim the crown as the Philippines’ Best Bar. Not only do they deliver coffee—blends, single origin roasts, and ready-to-drink—but they also serve the finest cocktails! Check out their selection on Instagram @thecurator_, and you’re sure to find something for every morning and night of the week.

6. EDSA Beverage Design Group

EDSA Beverage Design Group will open up a world of what they call liquid cuisine to you and your taste buds. They really do have something for everyone: beans freshly ground for your brewing style, RTD brews, milk for your coffee, and even healthy drinks like kombucha and turmeric tonics! Head’s up: their menu will have you clicking “Add to Order” again and again and again.

7. Yardstick Coffee

Yardstick Coffee is another coffee shop with a strong local following, and for good reason. They’ve long been known as one of Makati’s hottest spots and, while this lockdown has everyone stuck at home, their momentum hasn’t slowed one bit as they’ve only expanded their customer base with door-to-door deliveries and lockdown-exclusives. They’ve also partnered with Manila Takeout to create merch with proceeds going to the partner-restaurants’ service teams. It’s good coffee being served by good people.

8. Bluesmith

This specialty coffee shop isn’t your average café. Bluesmith bolsters your breakfast with beverages sure to boost your mood and food, either frozen or freshly cooked, that you’ll keep coming back to. They offer only the best in coffee and comfort food at Bluesmith.

9. Alon ng Kape

Alex Lauan’s passion-project-turned-coffee-scene-darling, Alon ng Kape, is a one-man micro roastery you won’t be able to help but love. Attention to detail and no corners cut is Alex’s calling card as he even offers specialty water prepared just for coffee brewing! The unique ingredients according to their Instagram? Magnesium, Sodium, dasal. Order your bag of beans and bottle of water from Alon ng Kape, and taste the difference!

10. Connector Coffee

Looking for something completely different? Connector Coffee, as the name suggests, will connect you to some of the rarest and most sought-after roasts out there, local and international. Stay glued to their IG, @connectorcoffee, so you don’t miss out on any limited drops! Connector Coffee’s Bryan Garrido will always have something new for you.
